Yep, there's always a write off when it comes to energy. Most of these idealists try to tell you that their car is pollution free and runs on thoughts. They don't want to talk about the energy it takes to bring the electricity to you which powers their "new" idea, the cost, the inconvenience and danger of being on the road with such a clown car, driving around with your knees under your chin, etc. Like Diver Dennis says, be very skeptical when someone brings up the "perpetual motion" theme. Personally, if the vehicle doesn't have a 400hp V-8 with an extended cab and 8' bed, air conditioning and full power, 4-wheel drive, a tow package with overdrive and the capability of going 130mph plus a range of at least 500 miles to a tank, I'm not interested. A gallon of gas is cheaper than a gallon of milk. How far will a gallon of milk get you?
