Do any of you guys get insurance for diving out at Catalina (or any of the Channel Islands)? Is it a good idea to protect your equipment?

PnL once bubbled...

:)

I guess getting DAN will cover it - I just haven't looked into it yet.

Dan will provide dive insurance but equipment insurance is through a third party and is separate from the Dan premium.

I don't have equipment insurance, but dive insurance is absolutely required. You can have a dive accident anywhere (in the water, that is) and a trip to the chamber (like the one in Catalina) will cost you $6,000 on average . And that's just for the chamber part. Transportation will cost you extra, especially if you need a helicopter.

Don't get in the water again until you're insured, unless you can afford to be self-insured. Most regular insurance companies won't cover dive accidents.

then there is nothing peculiar to the Channel Islands or Catalina that would require it. There's no thief cartel operating on the dive boats, as far as I can see.

I have a lot of photo equipment, but after checking out various insurance plans I didn't consider any of them cost-effective for me. If I get a flood someday, I'll absorb the repair fee.

As Arnaud says, though, I wouldn't dive anywhere without dive medical insurance.

I also think everyone should have the dive insurance. It is not that expensive.

As far as having your equipment insured to dive off Catalina I don't think it is necessary. I have left my gear unattended many many times at Casino Point, as have virtually every other diver who dives that location, and have never had even a hint of someone walking off with my gear. Most of us will leave it our gear along the wall and walk over to grab a bite during our SI.

But I do carry equipment insurance when traveling just in case it gets damaged.
