I was just reading a thread about tipping and how much you should tip and when. And it made me think....

Who should you tip?
(i did a search)

On vacation dives there can be a lot of crew involved so who gets the tip.

Do crew generally share tips amongst themselves? i hope so.

I was on a boat recently where there is the captain, the DM ands sometimes a deck hand. The first day I tipped the captain and the DM but after that I just tipped the DM...

Who does everyone tip? Or is sharing of tips pretty universal?

I only tip if the service is above and beyond what would be expected. Usually I don't tip. but I'm also not int he US or Canada.

Whilst in Phuket, there was a tip box on the dive boat - the DM made it clear that the tips on that boat were spread amongst the DM's, captain and crew. The DM was great, food was better than what I would expect at a Thai restaurant, and the diving was fantastic. I tipped well.

The Captain and DM usually split the tips for the trip, since it is truely a "team" effort for a successful trip. If you have a private guide, or so inclined to tip someone dedicated to you and your party--the tip should be given directly to them.

I ask the individual operators, the manager of the resort usually, about how tips are distributed.

I tip and I believe in tipping. I also believe that I tip because I am guilted into the process of tipping. I believe in giving the DM some extra money after the dive. I tip anywhere from $5 to $10 a dive depending on how interactive the DM was with me and if I required such interaction. Why I tip a captain who is also the dive operator I have no idea. Hell I tip the woman at the ball game who pours me a watered down beer. I have not tipped at McDonald's yet. Nor do I tip the folks at my LDS, but I have been known to buy a beer or two for them. Hmmm, I may need to process my need to give away money with my own therapist. Maybe I am a strong believer in Reagan Economics. That money has to trickle somewhere. But then again it does not feel like it is really trickling down to me. Boy, I wish I was British. At the end of this I am not sure I really believe in tipping. Forget it, it is early morning and I am off to be the dummy for a rescue dive class in Spring Mill Pond. Good Diving and Good Morning.

I typically tip the DM and the Captain only. I believe it is up to them to split the tip with their deck hands. I start with expecting to tip and if they do an acceptable job, they get the tip. If I'm treated below what I think is acceptable - no tip and I won't be back. I have been known to increase my tippage if I feel I'm treated above and beyond.

Ok the senario is as follows, LDS has thier own boat, his trips basically are just the shuttle bus for us. We meet him at the dock, We load and off load, help him clean up and dock. He doesn't dive with us but does act as the boat captain. And charges us $115 PP for the tanks with air. Tip or no tip?

Thats a tough one. Maybe a small tip? Hes not realy providing one on one service thou...

Thats what I think, I usually bring treats & drinks along...

I usually give the tip directly to the DM. If they split it with the captain and the other crew, that it up to them.

On boats that are just a shuttle to the dive site, I don't tip the captain/owner, although I have bought him lunch after a dive.
