Does anyone know who the person is who is gathering photos of the local white tip population for ID purposes? We just had an A plus couple of dives today in the Bay (Moanaloa) and I got about six shots of some large white tips. I also notice lots of young turtles these past couple months. Saw my first Great Barracuda in a while..... I hear the researcher who is asking for pictures might be at U of H. Thanks Captain Johnny Pang!

Hey Catherine I just saw something about it in the newspaper today. Check online at starbulletin.com or honoluluadvertiser.com I don't remember which paper it was in. Oh yea-- I won't be diving for a while-- I screwed up my wrist and thumb playing golf. I can barely get my shorts/pants on much less a wetsuit. I will call you sometime soon though.

Aloha Ladies~

There is a website with more info- I can't remember the exact url.... there are all those bumper stickers with spot a white tip on them that has the website address. I will see if I can run it down today and post it here for all.

We saw a big white tip at the San Pedro this week as well. Almost 7 ft- Lonnie got it on video, but I haven't seen it yet.

Melissa- I hope your wrist gets better soon. I just went through a similar thing but I had to keep diving! You will have to come out with us all when you can.

Talk to you soon-

I have to go to the orthopedic dr. sometime soon. I am "suppose" to hear from them sometime this coming week. Of course that is at Tripler so who knows. I would dive if I could get the wetsuit on. I wear a 3 4 5mm and still get cold. Guess I have to move up to the 7mm. I have a 3mm but I was still cold with the 5 so don't know if I could hang. I would go through some serious air. I probably should try though. Where are you all going next weekend? Vince just left for his TDY today (gets back in Dec.).

Thank-you very much!

Dear all, my name is Nick Whitney and I'm the guy studying whitetip reef sharks at UH. Thanks so much to Catherine for directing me to Scubaboard.

We're trying to analyze whitetip movements patterns throughout the islands using several methods, one of which is photo-identification.

As most of you probably know, whitetips have dark spots on their sides that are unique for each individual, and can be used like a "natural tag" to track how far that shark has moved, how long it stays in an area, how often it uses a certain cave or ledge, etc.

The catch is that we need pictures - as many pictures as possible from local divers!

Please help us spread the word and check out http://whitetip.hawaii.edu for more info!

You can also catch a 12-minute segment of our project on National Geographic this Thursday (more info on the website above).

Mahalo!
