I am considering a purchase of the S90 and the Ikelite housing. After downloading the Owners Manual from the Canon website it looks like you need to access the rear control to select and set white balance. Does anyone know if that is true as the Ikelite housing doesn't give you access to that control. If I shoot RAW, is there any reason to even set white balance?

I don't know about the RAW thing but after my initial excitement about the Ikelite housing, further investigation into the S90 reveals that the camera is crippled without access to the rear control dial and no, the Ikelite does not provide that control, too bad that is. I guess that is the sacrifice for insisting upon fitting every camera into a generic plastic box.

The Fisheye housing looks like it will provide access to the rear control dial. Still no news on the lens options though...

one advantage (most important one- IMO) to shooting RAW is to adjust the WB in post processing.
also, if using Canon's raw image task, you may have to fiddle with the exposure & shooting mode (Vivid, neutral, lighter/darker skin tone...etc) however do not get adrift to do that for each & every shot.
if you shoot raw, I found that increasing the sharpness in post processing results in more crisp images.
I'll try to upload some examples once I'm home (before & after stuff) :)

Does anyone know if the rear control dial is accessible in the Canon housing -- either directly or through the same type of work-around that is used on the S80?

Peter, best I could determine, having actually used and shot a S90 now, without access to the rear control dial the camera becomes complicated. You can either preset various settings before closing the housing or you can temporarily assign them to the front control ring, make your setting and then re-assign the front control ring back to your primary required function.

Canon S90 options, hypothetical:

A. Canon housing, cheap, fragile, plasticky, really only intended as a dry glove, probably has full control access, not wet lens compatible

B. Ikelite, reasonable price, designed for scuba diving, no access to rear control dial cripples the camera, wet lens compatible

C. Fisheye, expensive, rugged aluminum, right now it is just a solid model in CAD, has full camera control, probably will not be compatible with wet lenses

Of course, this is just a guess based on what we have seen.

If I understand the S90 manual, without having access to the camera, you can assign the front control ring to change WB settings and there appear to be buttons on the rear of the Ikelite housing to press the Function Set button. You just can't rotate the ring control ring.

That of course gives up other options such as mode, flash, etc. settings.

Nemrod -- My S80 Canon housing uses an Inon adaptor for Inon wet lenses. Do you think (know?) that the S90 housing won't be able to use that adaptor or that Inon won't make one for it?

The housing which has been shown for the camera by Canon has the square snout, if that is really the case, for the case (pun), no, the wet lenses will not mate correctly. We will just have to wait and see I suppose. N

Always shoot Raw... That is the first thing i tell anyone when working with them in photography.

One thing that will work wonders for most photographers including underwater is the WHIBAL CARD

Ideally you are going to shoot RAW and shoot the card first, Stick it on a lanyard and hang it from the camera if you need be. I suggest any time you change depths more than 20 feet re shoot the card. When it comes to post your basically just going to select all the images and the card shot for that depth and set the adjustment on the card shot only and it will auto correct everything else. When you start forgetting to re shoot he card at depth is where you can get messed up adjustments.

Check out thier website and how it works.. Its an amazing tool to have.
