After doing a lot of research myself, reading endless reviews on previous cameras, i decided to go with the Canon powershot A630. I have it in the Canon case and so far i have had it on 4 or 5 dives, one of which was to 97 feet. I have had no leaks so far and have been extremely impressed with the quality. In testing it out i have just left it on the underwater auto settings and it has done pretty well for itself. I mainly just use it for fun and to show people where i have gone. Without a strobe i find myself having to cover the flash diffuser with my hand in order to get rid of some of the noise. On auto settings the sutter speed is very snappy. i have energizer rechargable batteries on it and have taken over 300 pictures/videos w. flash and lcd constantly on without even showing a low battery sign. I will eventually start to play with the white balance but for pure enjoyment it has been an awesome camera. Takes pretty good videos and is all around easy to use with high quality.

UH, OH!! Just to confuse the decision, they just came out with the A570IS. From the Canon website:

Canon's most affordable A-Series digital camera with proprietary Optical Image Stabilizer Technology for steady shooting at all zoom settings
7.1 Megapixel resolution and powerful Canon 4x Optical Zoom lens in an elegant silver metallic body for those must have family moments
DIGIC III Image Processor with improved Face Detection Technology and Red-eye Correction for sharper images and improved functionality
Clear, high-resolution 2.5-inch LCD for easy on-camera viewing
ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto to reduce image blur and expand low-light shooting capability
Four movie modes including 30 fps VGA and 60 fps Fast Frame Rate
Power on the go with two AA-size batteries
Underwater Case WP-DC12

Dammit Willar, I just ordered an A640/WPDC-8 setup. Oh well, for someone like me, I wouldnt be able to tell one camera from the other. This will be my first Underwater camera setup and I hope I can learn how to use it without outgrowing it.

I'm sure you'll love the A640! I have the S3IS which is very similar and love it. I am looking for a smaller travel and dive camera and was leaning toward the A710IS. However, the A570IS is a slightly smaller camera with most of the features of the A710 at a price $100 less. Looks like a winner for me!

Hmmm just cancelled my order! The company that I was ordering through seems to not be the sort of company I want to do business with. I paid extra for express delivery and they say I have to wait until next week. BS!! So, I have a question, Does anyone actually have, in their possession, a Canon A640? The local stores here say that Canon has not even released it yet??? Weird, some of the online dealers state they have them IN STOCK?

Update.

I thank everyone's opinion and it was a tough call. The bottom line is that folks are happy with either one of the cameras. So I figured I would not be going wrong with either one.... and it is an upgrade from the A70.

The A70 Canon housing has made quite a journey..... The Tuama
otu Atolls of French Polynesia, Hawaii, Cozumel, Roatan, Belize, La Paz, and of course, Catalina and San Diego. The housing flooded only once in approximately 110 dives and that was pure and simple my error. I did not clean the o-ring prior to a dive. When I needed a replacement I just went to e-bay and picked up another camera. The only reason I am replacing the A70 is that it is now acting funny in the water, but when I get it on land it works perfectly. So it is upgrade time.

:D I found an A710IS on e-bay for a buy-it-now price of $172.00 in its original box. I'm not even sure it was used it was because all of the cables were still wrapped. I have had it now for a week and I have been happy with it and still trying to learn all the bells and whistles on it.

For the most part, we who take pictures underwater, are not professionals, but want to have momentos of the wonderful creation underneath the surface of the water- a creation that I consider divers are especially blessed to see.

The next time I upgrade is when I can look at an object, blink my eye and have that picture recorded and printed by the time I get backt to the boat. Far-fetched? Maybe? Maybe not? Forty years ago we had cutting edge technology. It was called the 8-track tape, now we have the Video iPod with 80 GB hard drive. We've come a long way.... and it's still changing!

Thank you all for your experience, help and opinions. They really mattered to me and I am really glad I rediscovered the ScubaBoard.

Hey Pez,

I just got mine a week or two ago. I've been working a lot of overtime so the days run together, but I have mine in hand and it's great. Haven't done more than just play with the settings and fill up the 32 meg card it came with, but I have the WP-DC8 as well and will take it diving as soon as I get a day off (next week sometime.) I'll post any that turn out nice.

I actually got it from Canon. You'll love this. I've been shooting a Powershot A40 2MP for years. I love it and love the results. Most of the ones in my gallery are from that A40. The Canon housing leaked a couple months ago and ruined the camera, so I sent it in to Canon for repairs and they sent me a new A640 free of charge! I had to buy the new housing myself, but that's okay. That's what I call customer service! I think I'll stick with them for a while.

Starboard, looking forward to seeing your results. Got mine on the 30th (Ordered from another dealer!) I need someone to show me what It can do because I can't seem to figure it out! Had it out twice and took some terrible photos. I hope I figure it out before vacation!

Here's a basic description of my results.................:flush: :flush: Dark, Blurry, or just Blurry and Dark. The movie feature is easy enough ;)

Things have finally slowed down a bit at work, so I should be able to hit the water soon. I'll post any pics that are halfway decent and let you know about them.

Later.:14:
