Still undecided as to which reg to pass off. If you have a choice between passing off the reg in your mouth or the octo/pony reg, which one would you prefer? Why?

In many cases an out of air diver is not going to calmly swim up to you, give you the slash across the throat out of air signal and request to share air. It is more likely to be a paniced individual frantically swim up to you, rip your regulator out of your mouth, and possibly attempt to drag you to the surface. The individual knows that regulator works and is supplying air.

I would rather donate the reg that has the longer hose, but I'm not going to fight a paniced diver either.

the ooa diver will see and will want the reg in the donors mouth, my thought is to plan for what is instinctive anyway. the donor should know the rest of his gear and configure it in such a way as to be easy to get a replacement. I use a relatively long hose primary and an air2

I'd rather give up my octo, that being said, most OOA will probably go for your primary if they are really dry, so be prepared.

Donating the primary should work in any situation with any gear configuration. Keep it simple. Trying to assess options in an emergency is not a good thing. You need to be able to react quickly and automatically. Whatever you decide to do, make sure it becomes part of the pre-dive buddy check so that your buddy knows what to expect.

Primary. Has the longer hose and my secondary (another primary) is on the neck so they can't take that anyway.

I wonder why DIR doesn't actually specify a yellow hose and possibly regulator for the primary. Ideally you want the long hose primary to be highly visible to your buddy and the necklaced backup to be as invisible as possible.

I often think DIR divers have an obsession with black rubber that has nothing to do with diving :)

I think the reg in my mouth is pretty visible . . . We went through this in my Rescue class, where a diver not accustomed to donating the primary didn't recognize the black second stage next to my black wetglove. It was suggested that I put a yellow faceplate on my primary, but when you donate the reg, the faceplate is toward YOU. I changed the gloves instead -- now, with my bright green drygloves, I think the reg would be easier to see. Also, in a real OOA situation, I think the diver's eyes would have been locked on that reg in my mouth from the moment they approached, anyway.

Donate the primary.

1) you know it's functioning
2) your buddy will probably grab for it
