I don't think GUE cares what knots you use, so long as they hold. I use reef knots on my boltsnaps and fisherman's knots on my necklace.

A reef knot (also known as a square knot) is the easiest way to tie on a bolt snap after a few loops.

The fisherman's knot is a tighten-able loop that some divers use to secure their necklace. I personally prefer two overhand knots secured by a zip-tie.
