To take Essentials of Rec I need a 7 foot or a 5 Foot hose. Which one should I get? Is 7 foot better or 5 foot and why?

If a 5' hose fits(it's snug for some people), you won't need to stuff it in your belt or behind a can light. Either will work of a non-overhead environment.

Ron is exactly correct. The 7' hose is necessary in an overhead environment in order to airshare in single file, and is more common with most divers. The 5' hose will work perfectly well and will route easily. If you plan on moving on to tech, cave, or wreck, it makes more sense to start out with the longer 7' hose.

for what you are doing, whatever fits you. For me (I'm really tall), a 5' hose just didn't route/stow happily....

Good luck with your class!

Personally I go with a 7 foot hose if I have a canister light mounted. If no canister, I use a 5 footer.

A 5' is too short to fit me comfortably. When it came time to kit my wife she tried 5' and went with 7'. I figure if she can manage stowing the extra anyone can.

While either are fine in open water, my preference is a 7' hose. I tried a 5' hose for a while and it just doesn't stay put under the arm. A 7' hose is just easier to manage because you can tuck it under your can light or in your waist strap. Tucking it under the waist strap is becoming more common anyway as can light batteries become smaller and smaller.

Thanks everyone. It sounds like 7 ft is the way to go.

For open water I use a 5 1/2', the 5 was too tight and I am a slender person.

I asked the same question before, went with 7'. So I will suggest just get 7' and you will be good for a long time. routing under canister or stuff inside waist belt can be eaisly done. Why start with 5' then relearn the skill (at least part of it) later with 7'? And what is the advantage of having 5' to begin with?
