i have only done one pool dive but never the less fallen in love with the sport. my club/instructors have told me to get a sunnto dive computer but after checking a few i have no idea whick to get apart from one that hooks up to ur computer and records everything. il spend about 300 euro on one.
any ideas??

thanks,
stephen

Suunto Vyper. Great rig. You'll love it. Wrist mount or console. Personally I prefer the wrist mount. My console is reduced to SPG.

I find it hard to believe that, after one pool dive, anyone has told you to buy a computer. That should be one of the later equipment items you should get, assuming you pass the course and keep diving.

There are also a few thousand posts here concerning what computer you should buy, and none of them agree. Learn to dive, buy exposure equipment, regulator, BC and then worry about a computer.

I wanted to say that but decided to promote Suunto! LOL

Nothing wrong with the Sunnto computer, from what I have read from it's owners (I have not used one yet, won a Viper over Christmas and will be testing it soon). The real issue is do you need one at this stage of your diving. Some will argue that you never need one but that's another thread. While I do like diving with one, at this stage in your diving you really only need the essentials. BC, reg, gauges, exposure suits, bottom timer and a set of dive tables. Learn to dive with these, get some experience and then buy other equipement as you understand what YOU need and want.
While I am on the "what not to buy" subject, I would suggest that you only buy the bare essentials -mask/fins/snorkle and maybe a wetsuit and rent or borrow equipment for at least the first 10 dives. Use different types/brands of equipment and see which one suits you best. Don't rush in to a purchase of anything, buying slow is usually buying wiser.

Hi Stephen,

Welcome to the diving community !!
Herman just posted EXCELLENT advise, only get the bare essentials to start and rent different equipment at the beginning. It will give you a chance to test and see what you will really like. Equipment IS EXPENSIVE and this will give you a chance to make your decisions based on your testing rather than sales pitches.

Good Luck

That is the truth.

I have a new rule of thumb. Think twice or buy twice. Take your time in the beginning, and observe. Research the items you feel you want as part of your kit. Find people that are currently using them and get their perspective on the product. Then find a way to try before you buy. You will enjoy your purchases a lot more and get more bang for your buck when you do invest in gear.

A computer is a very personal instrument. It keeps track of YOUR diving. The first serious equipment I bought was my computer. You can rent the rest and not always you can rent a computer. It makes it possible to dive without having to stick to your 2 dimensional divetables and it will keep your divingrecords for you, which is nice to look back at.

I am using a Suunto Mosquito. It is sold in my country for a price under 300 Euros. It gives you both air, ean and freedive mode. You can replace the battery yourself. I am quite happy with it. Some people will call the Mosquito a cheap looking toy computer. So wear another computer if you are contender in a underwater beautypageant...

ok. thanks everyone. sounds like a much better idea to try out equipment first. i was only asking for future buying.

thanks,
stephen
