While I think I understand where you guys are coming from with the
SPG issue, I fail to see why you think that an SPG and wrist mounted computer is any
different from having an air integrated computer.

the simpler the techonology, the less likely it is to fail (KISS).

what's less likely to fail, an analog pressure gauge or a remote transmiter
under water?

that transmiter is an unnecessary failure point. it makes no sense to have it
when you can do the same thing without it.

you will admit that you can do the same thing without it, right? you just
don't need it.

i don't see any advantages to it, at all, not one

Well, unnecessary would be a matter of opinion. If you want hoseless AI, then it's required!

Of course, if your 1st stage has 2 HP ports, you can have your AI comp and eat your SPG, too! :-) That's why I got the AquaLung Cousteau 1st stage... mmm... SPG -- tastes kinda like chocolate! :-)

what do you gain by having a hoseless AI than you don't have with an SPG
and a wrist computer?

basically you gain a failure point and the need for redundancy.

if you're a manufacturer, this is a dream come true

The AI computer records the amount of air left at each point for future log file analysis, and for those that don't feel like being smart, it will give them air-time-remaining estimates (usually).

It really doesn't matter if it's hosed or hoseless -- the hosed can still fail, too!

i don't think this is a good thing ;)

Here's a slightly different perspective. After some pool time this weekend I'm all but ready to get rid of my Cobra and maybe replace it with a Vytec. I was thinking that that a plain SPG with the wireless AI as a backup wouldn't be a bad way to go, but then I'm not feeling like I need to have two computers either (to each his own). I really don't care for the hose on the Cobra hanging down since it means fishing for the console.

OTOH, the Vyper is several benjamins cheaper, so I'm still pondering if the AI with SDM gives me that much useful information (vs. just plugging in the starting/ending pressures into SDM later). Any thoughts on this from other Vytec/Cobra/D9 users who are using SDM?

...The only caveat on all of this is that I personally find the mounting arrangement for the HP sender onto your first stage a little worrying.

I have mine attached to a 7" HP hose like this http://www.users.on.net/~abowie/suunto.htm

Twins set up look like this http://www.users.on.net/~abowie/hose.htm
BTW, I really like your mod. Did you just remove the inner O-ring plug or is it in the end where the hose meets the first stage or ???

Honestly I just can't figure out why you'd need two air-integrated computers. I can understand (although not agree with) the attraction of having a single one. But for backup, why not just use an SPG and bottom timer? Hopefully you're not using the computer for deco, so you should be able to abort the dive easily. Even if you do push over into deco, hopefully you've got a buddy with a computer? And if you don't have a buddy and you've found yourself into deco, you have a *lot* more to worry about...

You can get a UWATEC bottom timer and an SPG for something like $200 or less? and you can take the $400-$800 you save and spend it on steel tanks or something like that...

Agree, And some more training & discipline if needed. I don't even have one AI computer. Mechanical & timer. Great backups.

PS Planning dives is a good thing.
