So I went diving yesterday at wetherill. Great day....vis ok @10-15', but the warm water temp makes up for ok vis, I guess.

Today I was really excited because I was invited on a boat out of Boston. I figured after all the shore diving I've been doing, maybe a boat dive would be better vis - wrong. We dropped in @25' of water. I think we were technically still in the harbor, within the surrounding islands....can't remember the name of the site. So we jump in and descend down the anchor line. Right away it is like pea soup....so bad that I actually hit the bottom before seeing it! The current was moving pretty good as well. At the anchor, my buddy had to urge me away because I was ready to go right back up the line. So we continued the dive, crawling along the bottom looking for lobsters. Navigating back was fun, we wound up about 50-75yards down current from the boat and had a nice swim back against it. No one on the boat, out of 5 divers got back in for a 2nd dive, it was that crappy a dive.

My question is - Is this as good as it gets? Where is the good vis? Am I just having bad luck? I think the best dives I've done were around cape ann...vis maybe 20-25 at best - I like that! Maybe I'm just getting there on the wrong days.

Northeast winds can churn things up pretty good. Every day can be different. Don't judge a site by the viz on a single day.

At least you got wet ;)

Vis was not good off Charlestown coast either. For some reason there was a lot af particulates in the water and loads of comb jellies.

Viz was excellent in the Outer Harbor until about a month ago, then it went to hell. We had great viz on the Salisbury in July(20') then in August it dropped to 8 to 10'. Lots of 'floaters' and matter suspended in the water. I just ran a line and off we went. In low viz and current conditions, plan to run a line off of or near the anchor chain to avoid getting lost and the subsequent long swim back to boat against the current.

At least you now have some real low vis. experience ;)
