AKR is also a cheap, quick cab ride from West End and West Bay beach. There would be a lot more things to do for a non diving or less avid diver to do. West End can be a great place to spend a little time and take a 5 minute water taxi to the beach, which is quite beautiful, but getting more and more develped. No need to to feel like you are held captive at your resort.Coco View and FI are located quite a distance from anything worthwhile ...other than the diving. There are lots of tourist related activities close by AKR.The diving is quite nice also! Enjoy yourself ...no matter what you decide, you will like Roatan.

Hooked-Again:
...The travel agent advised us that reports from other divers she had sent to Fantasy Island were not favorable. In her words they said it was a "dump". This is contrary to any reports I have read on Scuba Board so would like any input from divers that have been to Fantasy Island recently.

Thanks.
Breathe shallow-Dive deep; BE SAFE
I was at FI in Sept 2004 and again in August 2005 and I thought it was very nice; beautiful beach, large. clean, well appointed rooms, decent food and friendly staff. The dive opearion is also very good. In no way could it be considered a dump.

We are also looking to go to Roatan this June. We will be traveling with non diving family and friends (who I am hoping to convert  ). To make everyone happy, we are looking into Luna Beach resort, due to the close proximity to West End. Does anyone have any experience/comments on LBR???

Thanks

Enjoy the ride

CCV is a fantastic peaceful resort and my wife and I love it. Everyone is friendly and helpful. You can dive your heart out with two wall dives right out front. It is really easy too hook up with someone at anytime if your partner wants to sit a dive out. My wife and I love diving and then relaxing before another dive but for someone that wants a fast moving night life this wouldn't be it. It tends to quiet down a lot at night after everyone sits around the bar and finish telling stories. We have been only twice with our third trip coming in May.

You could always book into one of the nice hotels in the West End, then select the dive operator you like moss from the 10 based in the West End. That way you get lots of non diving activities because you are not in an isolated resort at the east end of the island, and you don't have to select a dive operator until you have actually seen how they run.

I would even go so far as reccomending you don't even book accommodation until you get here. Just buy a flight, when you get to Roatan take a taxi to the West End ($10)and choose the hotel you like most, followed by the dive operator you like most. I know that Coconut Tree will let you drop your bags there while you spend 30 mins checking out the beautiful beach lined town looking for a nice little cabana which will cost roughly $40/night. If you come at any time other than easter of christmas there are always vacancies in nearly every hotel. If you don't like the West End you could even check into to CCV, FI or AKR when you get here, they also usually have vacancies.

i did not stay at AKR, but visited (for the dolphin encounter) and it seemed
like a wonderful place.

my wife and i stayed at CocoView, and the diveboats and crews were
awesome, but the amenities a bit on the short side. i would stay there
again, definetely, but you have to be ready for no-frills (though clean
and friendly) accomodations.

I'm headed to Roatan in a couple of days for a week of diving. We're staying at a place called Reef House. Though I've never been, the organizer of our trip was there last year and said it was fantastic. They have a website. http://www.reefhouseresort.com .

SStrecker:
I am also interested in going to Roatan at around the same time. AKR definitely seems to be the classiest operation, in terms of non diving factors. (I need to keep a non-diving wife happy at this remote locale.) Nevertheless, where can I find a good (discounted) deal on this resort. My searches have only uncovered their standard seasonally adjusted rack rates. I am convinced that better pricing is available. Do you have any advice in that regard? (Please view this as a thread detail clarification instead of a hijack.) Thanks.

We did a lot of research on Roatan. We decided on AKR and have subsequently booked our trip. The best discounts you will find are for large groups booking at the same time. The best I could find for a Key Standard Room all- inclusive double occupancy was pretty much their normal pricing. I hope you can find something cheaper. LOL. Maybe we'll see you there April 29 through May 6.

Happy Diving!!!
