I would take a better look at Barbados. That's my next vacation (May 2010). There is more information on ScubaBoard under the Lesser Antilles. Barbados does have its share if tourists & cruise ships. Check the port authority website to plan accordingly.

Any island that is that small with two major rum distilleries has got to be on my list of things to do. :D

Hi again,

Thanks to all for the great suggestions and advice.

I did a little checking and it only takes an hour to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and another hour to take the ferry from Carmen to Cozumel. Although it might be a little more touristy than I'd find ideal, we've been talking about getting down to the Yucatan see the ruins for several years and it would be great to combine this with a bunch of diving. I wasn't familiar with the cenotes, but that is also intriguing. My husband started chanting Coz-u-mel last night, so I think we have a winner!

If we can't make that work with our tickets, the other suggestions are also good and things to keep in mind for future trips.

Thanks again!

be aware that the ferry does not run every hour and that you have to buy the tickets at a booth before boarding time. We arrived at the dock once when the boat was boarding and they wouldn't sell us a ticket... then we discovered that there was not another ferry for 2 hours! There are 2 different ferry companies, too, who alternated each hour. So buy your tickets 1 way as you don't know which company will be running.

The Maldives!

I have just got back from a liveaboard holiday with Maldives Scuba Tours. I had a brilliant time, the diving was excellent (manta rays, sharks and beautiful coral reef) and the dive guides were extremely friendly and helpful. The boats (MV Sea Queen and MV Sea Spirit) were very nice and comfortable and I will definitely be going back! scubascuba .com

Hi Chloe,

Welcome to SB!

The Maldives are very high on our life list of places to dive, but unfortunately we won't get there with a frequent flier ticket on Jet Blue. Glad to hear you had a great time!
