Looking for suggestions of tropical locations...

If you could dive anywhere in September, and wanted to avoid hurricane, monsoon or just plain wet season where would it be?

It's the wrong time of year for SE Asia or the Caribbean

Any ideas? Thanks

CAlfornia, Catalina or outer Channel Islands. Great diving, water is mid 60s to mid-70s, so 7mm suit hood and gloves. BUT.. there is nothing like the kelp forest!

No, its not tropical, but you can't find tropical in Sept where you aren't threatened by weather issues.

The ABC's - Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao. Below the hurricane belt so they rarely get hit or even affected. Bonaire is the best shore diving in the Caribbean. All small stuff mostly. www.infobonaire.com or www.curacao.com. Never been to Aruba.

Komodo and Bali were perfect in September...no rain..no storm..from 3 weeks in 2012..

The ABC islands are below the hurricane belt, and Grenada is a pretty safe bet. But when there is not a hurricane the weather is ideal for diving all over the Caribbean, just take out hurricane insurance.
Or try further afield. Mozambique is great, as is the East Coast of South Africa. (Sodwana Bay is the southern most tropical reef in Africa.

Fakarava and Rangiroa, atolls in French Polynesia. You'd be going during their winter/high season, which is may to october, and generally more dry and less hot than their summer season.

I would stay at Tevahine dream in Rangiroa, and probably Havaiki Pearl Farm on Fakarava, which is north pass. There's great diving on south pass as well, but the accomodations there aren't what we want. I'm fine in a non resort pension, but I do need electricity in my bungalow. If you don't care, then South pass has some pensions one of which is right by the pass.

Rangiroa also has a nice resort, the Kia Ora, but having stayed there once, we far prefer the Tevahine Dream pension, and the owner and his family are really wonderful. The resort is popular, we just prefer the feel of a small pension more. The snorkeling just out from your bungalows there is really quite good as well. And it's free.

Agree with wico although I prefer Pensione Tiena and Marie on Rangiroa right by Tiputa pass with electricity and food incl $60 per night. I spent the month of January in FP and no weather complaints.
I dont see that september is going to be a real problem in SEA - probability of serious weather incidents is a little higher but have had no troubles in SEA during september other than localised floods on year in thailand.

feel free to PM if you want to know more about Grenada diving, I just spent a TON of time diving there over the last year :)

Going to be in Carriacou and Grenada mid September (week each). Staying at rental houses both islands and have already communicated with Deefer on Carriacou...they sound fine. I am still looking into a dive shop on Grenada, we've rented a house near Sagesse Bay (I know it's out of the way, but the wife doesn't dive and she liked the birdwatching in the area....she travels with me...I try to please her on lodging). Can anyone recommend a shop on Grenada, like I said we're staying a week near Sagesse Bay, but I will have a car the whole time. I don't mind a bit of a drive to dive shop, but if they're comparable, the closer the better.
Any other hints anyone has.....thanks

Joe

Hi Crispo!

I can't say for the Caribbean due to my lack of experience there but there are many places around SEA for diving in September. I have spent a few years in Alor 'Indonesia' and the weather is still great (obviously you can never guarantee the weather!) The reefs are stunning and very healthy, nice fish life with a few sharks around and some great muck if you're into it. It's also really quiet with only a few resorts around so you are usually diving with your own small group which is a huge bonus! :-)
