Hi,

I am wondering where else in the world is a good place to experience BIG in your face current diving such as at Blue Corner where you use a reef hook. Pelagics viewing preferred - what else would you look at with the current in your face while hooked in....

Preferably warm water, though not an absolute requirement. No geographical limitations

I dived Palau in Feb 2004 and had a great time.

Thanks.

Galapagos- Wolf and Darwin. You must go between June and Nov for whale shark action. Plenty of current, plenty of hammerheads, plenty of whalesharks

Cocos Island- very similar to Galapagos

French Polynesia-Tahiti Aggressor, way more sharks than Blue Corner!

Thanks Mike!

I've read and watched video (Blue Planet) on Cocos and heard about Galapagos, but I understand those are both colder water dives. Did you dive Malpelo? I read the hammerheads school in shallower depths. I need to get Nitrox certified now so I can use a rebreather!

Tahiti is a new blip on the radar screen for this type of dive. Any particular site(s)?

To clarify you don't just drift at these places you actually hook in correct?

Galapagos can be kind of cold. Mid 60s in the south but mid to high 70s at Wolf and Darwin.

When i was in Cocos it was 81 (July) so nice and warm. The best place was Alcyone for the Hammers, around 80-95 feet. I didn't use a rebreather, just Nitrox which is a definite must. I think July probably the best time of year there. A few colder upwellings but not many.
I didn't do Malpelo.

French Polynesia. You have to get to the Tuamotus. Best done on the Tahiti Aggressor liveaboard. Lots of reef hooking going on there. They visit Rangiroa, Apataki, Toau, and Fakarava. They do the reef hook everywhere except Rangi which is too deep for it.
I would recommend January.

Hook in? Pelagics? Nothing else to see?

I would easily recommend Tobago, but the roller coaster ride alone is worth it if your dive op can't find you the Mantas.

try this:

That'll clue you in to Tobago.

Thanks you both Mike and RoatanMan.

I just ordered the Lonely Planet D&S Tahiti and FP today - $1.25 on Ebay! (I lucked out) Money saved = money spent on diving. That's possibly 1 night lodging in the Philippines, or a drink or two in Tahiti? I ordered LP D&S Trinidad and Tobago (And Philippines, Puerto Rico, Turks & Caicos, and Belize) already a few days ago coincidentally.

Didn't know that Cocos waters got that warm. Hmmm...maybe I won't have to practice diving in cold waters up here in the PNW. Haven't been since I was certified, and that was a long time ago.

I'm hoping to snorkel with Whale Sharks in Donsol, Philippines early next year.

Just thought I'd recommend the Shark Watcher's Handbook too as a great resource. Maybe you already know about it? Great quasi-dive guidebook. Good recent info on shark finning effects in some areas.

Cheers

Don't forget the Brothers in the Red Sea!
Every bit as good as Blue Corner, has the current/warm water/pelagics. Soft coral is better than Palau.
Also two great wrecks, better than those in Palau IMO, mainly due to better vis. than Malakal.

One to keep on your wishlist!!

Which Blue Corner are you talking about? Blue Corner off Lombongan Island in Bali? The first line in the dive guide book to Bali described that Blue Corner as "DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!". You talk about a roller coaster ride! Not just fast current but BIG time ups and downs. My first dive there was very worrisome....next was ecstatic! I guess there are Blue Corners all over the world.

I'm getting ready to leave for the Aggressor in Tahiti. Have any suggestions/ recommendations/ tips based on past experience? How was the boat, crew and dive operations?
