Hi all,

Hope ya can help. I'm looking for a place that lists the practical skills requirements for all of the Padi classes. I wasn't sure what skills I had to perform until I showed up to the OW class. Padi's website doesn't seem to list this info..

Is there somewhere I can find these listed? I'm taking AOW in a month or so and I'd like to know what to expect. What about Rescue? Etc etc...

Thanks for the help!

Darin

Cool, thanks for the link.

Does anyone have anything like this for the other certs?

Thanks

Darin

Walter:
Go to this site. You'll find the requirements of three agencies, including PADI. This is just the OW course requirements.
Thanks for the comparison.
Since my PADI certification number is not listed I think I can say that my PADI course was more thorough than required without getting my instructors in trouble with their agency for being out of sinc, or hard cases. (smiley face here)
I am surprised by your discoveries and confused that so many basic skills aren't required. I think I begin to understand some of the militancy that seems to run through some of the divers on the board.

Huh?

I guess I stirred the sh!t pot. I don't want info on who's suing who yadda yadda...

I just want to know what I need to look out for in the next classes I take. Any help is welcomed.

Please take the political discussions elsewhere.

Thanks

Darin

Given that you can do a number of different types of dives to complete an advanced certification, the requirements can vary from course to course. The best bet is to just ask the instructor and/or dive store staff for a list of the requirements.

You have to take that list of required skills with a large grain of salt and use some common sense when reading it. Just because column one, the YMCA course, has a skill listed and the other agencies have an "N" in their column doesn't mean there is a qualitative difference in the standards. It also doesn't mean the skill isn't taught as part of the course. To go with the mentioned example: the Y requires "no mask breathing" as a defined skill, NAUI does not. NAUI does require mask removal and replacement. Only the worst of instructors would allow a student not to breathe between the removal and replacement of the mask. Do you need to be told everything? NAUI doesn't think so. I don't know a single NAUI instructor who doesn't have students breathe for some time U/W without a mask.
Walter will remind me that the skill is NOT in the standard, and he's correct. But, does it NEED to be?

I could go on, but I think we beat this to death a year or so ago. I still maintain that the list is inaccurate in many ways. Ask your instructor what he or she teaches.

Darin,
PM me for standards for any PADI or NAUI course.
