Greetings Everyone,

I plan to visit New Orleans late September or October time frame. I would like to go either dive locally or dive on an oil rig.

Any ideas regarding locations or dive stores would be greatly appreciated.

Not a whole lot of diving here in NOLA - vis. in lake Pontchartrain, from what I'm told (never dived it myself) is usually pretty poor. A friend of mine goes spearfishing out of Port Fourchon, but he goes with friends who have their own boats - I am not sure if there are any dive charters out of there but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find out.

Greetings Doll_Fin,

Thanks so much for your prompt reply and advise. Where do you typically go diving ? I contacted couple of dive shops and they told me that they no longer offer charters to oil rigs.

Are you aware of any private owners that may be willing to take a diver along for the ride or at a cost?

Regards,

samer

Most of us from Louisiana either drive west to Texas or east to Florida to dive. Personally, I dive in caves more than not, so it's Marianna, FL for me. But you can dive at Vortex Springs, shore dives off Alabama and the Florida panhandle including many wrecks. You can dive up at ABWA near Birmingham, or at Lake Travis in Austin. But in Louisiana, some people go dive in the lake (Ponchartrain) just to get wet (15 feet), but that is a lot of work, albeit near to us, for low vis and not much to see unless you like to spear fish and don't mind lots of fishhooks.
