I can't speak with any moral or ethical superiority here since I kept aquaria (holding tanks mainly) in my marine biology lab and had mortalities in them as well. However, I made a habit NOT to keep any marine mammals... sound philosophy since the tanks were only 4' x 6' x 1'

Where else would I get to see a beluga whale without traveling to Alaska?

Let me tell you this, a beluga passing away peacefully in a large aquarium is a much better fate (for the whale) than it would have been in the wild. Thanks to a few documentaries, I've seen what happens to sick and old belugas. They get ripped to shreds by polar bears in the shallow waters.
