I just don't log dives
I've looked and looked for general advice on when to go toothing out of Venice, FL.

I haven't found much advice on what time of year is best. I'm looking to drive over (from Fort Lauderdale) and spend a Monday-Friday week, diving two tanks from the beach (from Yaks), weather permitting of course.

Can anyone give tips for what season is best for visibility in the area?

Thanks,

This is on my diving bucket list also.
Information appreciated.

Actually you might not like this but, the best time is Mar,Apr, May. The reason for this is lack of divers during the winter months and winter storms turning over the bottom. By summer hundreds of people are out there everyday looking for teeth.

I am funny in that I just go diving and take what I get whether it is fast river currents, bouncy seas, no vizibility, rain, thunderstorms, whatever.

I was driving to Venice this past summer with arrangements to dive with Jamie Boswick off the Aristakat.

En-route I heard that all Venice diving was canceled due to viz.

Being a black water diver, I had never heard of such nonsense, so I called Jamie. He validated the bad conditions and canceled diving. One week later the conditions were excellent. (The point is .... dive conditions change quickly)

Bottom line... Weather and river run-off have an effect on viz. This can happen anytime. I personally do not think one season is going to be significantly different than another in regards to viz

I would plan my dive and call these guys at the last minute for an update on conditions.

The best time to dive for teeth is right after conditions calm down after a storm. Wind causes waves, waves stir things up and often uncover teeth.

There is a stickie under the Venice Fossil Divers section which is entitled Beach & Weather Conditions. Most folks will post there, when they dived & what the conditions were. Like Lee said, conditions can change quickly. Usually, east winds are preferable. Right now the water temp is cccccold. Last report I heard was 54.

It's absurd to suggest that the season doesn't matter. Yeah, the weather changes quickly year round. Sure, the river flows change with the weather. But clearly, the weather is seasonal.

Thanks to you guys who posted with local information. It's helpful.

I also checked the Pilot Chart and sure enough, favorable easterly winds are common in April.

I was also startled by the water temps. I didn't realize the Gulf got that cold. Brr... Ah well, the dry suit awaits.

Does anyone ever see flounder on these tooth dives? I love flounders.

Thanks all.

Yepper, all the time. As a matter of fact, the largest flounder I have ever seen was at South Brohard. It came shootin' out from under one of the blocks & was so big I thought it was a sting ray at first. :D

Nancy and I often bring home teeth and flounder dinner.
