I travel with a 30# Eclipse and have a 40# Evolve for doubles and have been happy with them both. If you go with Halcyon, why not start with the Eclipse system? You'll save some money, and if you want/need weight pockets, Infinity adjustment system, or padding, you can add them individually later.

Halcyon gear is very good quality, but tends to sit at the highest price point. The Infinity setup has a number of "extras" that add to the cost -- the Cinch setup, the backplate pad, and the shoulder strap pads. I know people who like those things, but they aren't necessary, and do add to the cost. As you point out, when you can get a backplate and wing AND reg for the same amount of money, it may be difficult to justify a little extra convenience for that much money.

If you wanted to go Halcyon, I'd suggest going with a simpler, basic system. Otherwise, as you have figured out already, you have a number of other manufacturers to choose among, with quite different prices.

Oh, and Tobin will know if you need a long plate . . . I can't remember, off the top of my head, where he feels the cutoff is for that.

A 30 lb wing will do just fine for Vancouver and the tropics (although at some future time, you might ENJOY getting a small, tropical wing -- they're fun). I've had a 130 and an Argon setup in the water with my 30 lb wing, with no problems.

Another vote for DSS & Tobin's support.

If you still want ti save some money, talk to Edd @ caveadvanturwrs.com, he can set you up with dive rite plate & oxycheq wing for a very good price. Edd is a great guy to work with too.

Have that said, I like DSS's setup slightly better than dive rite for cold water diving.

thanks again for all the responses. I've been reading through the boards and will give Tobin a call. One research topic leads to another and I find myself on here for a few hours looking at bp/w's, reg reviews, 7' hose setups, etc etc.

I just bought my setup from Tobin at DSS and I'm thrilled. He can evaluate your body type and diving plans and recommend something that will work for you. His setup includes the basic Hog harness, which at first I thought "what about all the bells and whistles", but it's everything you need and simple. You can add onto it as you want.

It also includes a quality backplate that doesn't require a single tank adapter. I'm really happy with it and I think I'd be upset if I had spent almost twice the cost for a different brand, knowing how well this setup works.
