MASS-Diver:
Did you guys go through the protocol in an emergency, if so what was it? Did the guide have a buddy? Did she have doubles? Did they supply the lights?
I was the guide's buddy, no doubles, had my own light and they supplied lights. The emergency protocol was in Spanish/English everyone was to stay close, twobytwo very close to each other, watch bouyancy everyone had octopus or AirII available, inspected each others gear but didn't do a share air drill u/w.

Just when you think you've seen it all. LOL

I know a guy who went to the gate at Vortex with an OW instructor for a guide. His reg quit working on him so he signaled OOA to the instructor. The instructor, realizing that he didn't have enough gas to get them both out, ran for the door and left him. You see the instructor wasn't cave trained or cave equiped either, he just thought the dive would be fun and the other idiot trusted him because he was an instructor.

Octopus? Air2? Ha HA HA

What the hell you can't live forever! Go for the gusto...just make sure your will is in order first.

So what happened to the student? And what were the consequences to the instructor? That sounds awful.

The instructor was cave trained, owned the shop and was instructing the AOW students. The other four in the group were an instructor and his three students finishing their AOW. I have no intention of trust me diving or cave diving again, just wasn't sure how far could go into a restricted area such as a cave, cavern, swim thru, wreck.... and when to call the dive and not follow

That makes it even worse in my eyes... someone that should have known better.

Well, there's no scuba laws telling you what you can and can't do. It comes down to what you should and shouldn't do. Personally an AOW student should be doing exactly what they are trained to do... keep aware of where you are and make sure there isn't anything above your head at any time during the dive.

Of course there is always the "What doesn't kill me only makes me stronger" method ;)

They both lived.

There were no consequenses to the instructor. There was no class going on, they were just out diving together.

If his reg failed, and his buddy left him, how did he get out?

You sure as h*ll cannot CESA from the gate. But then, there are a few air pockets along the way - lol.
