I'v been diving with just the generic mouthpiece that comes with my regulator, but I had a fairly intensive dive weekend and I wound up with a weird blister on my gums. I had no idea that was even possible and never had it happen before, but here we are. Also, I'm not really sure if it came from the mouthpiece but it's the only explanation I've got. So I've got another intensive dive weekend coming up and I want to switch out.

What's your favorite?

From what I gather mouthpieces breakdown into...

1. Moldable.
2. The type with ridge in the roof of your mouth.
3. Bigger cushier ones
4. basic
5. or maybe you don't care and whatever delivers air is fine.

There is a huge amount of personal fit/preference here.

I like the Atomic mouthpieces. Medium length, fairly thick and no ridge on the roof of the mouth.

Thin mouthpieces I chew through quickly; I probably bite down harder than necessary.

My favorites are some older SeaCure moldables that I bought back in the late 1990's. Recently I bought a new secure and another brand of moldable (can't remember the name of it) becasue my old ones have yellowed and look gross. I need to try one more time to remold them, but they so far haven't been nearly as good as my old ones

Some people have strong preferences, I don't notice a difference. Any of them, but go for a reputable brand name manufacturer that is less likely to use crappy plasticizer-leaching plastic.

SeaCure is especially nice for big heavy rebreather valves, I don't find them as necessary on normal OC regs but again some people love them.

Its very personal.l you just have to try a few. Some people love those comfobites. I had one years back only because it came on my new reg, and I despised it as did my husband. He likes his moldable mouthpiece. I bought a smaller version but haven’t gotten around to trying it yet. I like those 2 tone ones sold by a a number of companies, guessing they are all the same but dunno.

I had new Scubapro reg and was always fighting tension from the LP hose to the point where I bit through the mouth piece. I replaced the mouthpiece with one with a bridge behind teeth (Comfobite style) and really like it. I also got a Miflex LP hose. Point being if replacing the mouthpiece doesn’t solve it you can also play with hoses, swivels etc.

Seconded on the preference thing. It comes down to your mouth shape and your overall bite profile.

For me, the 'Long-bite' ones are perfect. They just fit my bite profile perfectly, and on a rebreather I can have the loop mouthpiece basically rest against my upper teeth during a dive and use 0 bite force to keep it in my mouth. Other people hate them because they extend so far back they are contacting gums/behind their teeth. One friend of mine with a Dive Rite reg set wound up with cold sores thanks to that during a dive trip and had to cut their mouthpieces till they got replacements of a different type.

I've tried the Comfobite style and the bridge just didn't fit my mouth at all. It felt like there was no space at all for my lips to seal. Any movement of my mouth or lips would let water in.
