I just heard today that my (non diving) little niece is going to Playa at the end of January to frolic on the beach with her parents.

Because I did not know if there were still a seaweed problem there I thought you guys could bring me up to date.

Much, much better than it's been.
Things can change very quickly, as you're probably aware, but my money would be on a great trip for your family - at least sargassum wise.
 
A co-worker just returned from Cancun and said that it was quite bad and they could not even go in the water.
