I was puzzled by a rattle coming from my UK C8. There are grey mettalic pellets loaded into a tube incorporated into the head behind the reflector. Does anyone know what these are??

They absorb any hydrogen gas given off by batteries. While these amounts may be miniscule, I've heard of a canister light letting go in Australia with a bang, so the risk, albiet tiny, is not theoretical.
