...I can even negotiate in Spanish...from airport to ferry pier...any locals know whats the latest going rate? One of those van things would work as well, since I get in at 11 am...

I seem to recall that the set rate for a taxi from the airport to Playa was around $65-70. A pre-booked (waiting for you on arrival) shared van (no guarantee how many stops on the way) is about $20-25. Private prebooked van is $60-65. Riviera Bus is 80 pesos.

When I was down a few weeks ago it was my first time alone and I just had easy to manage luggage so I went the el cheapo way and took the bus. I did have to wait a little over a half hr for the next departure, but I wasn't in a hurry and the price was right.

The Riviera Bus leaves the airport for Playa at 45 min past the hour from 10:45am to 8:45pm.

On my last trip it cost me $15. Total from Cancun airport toi my hotel on Coz. We were at the Cozumel Palace and they included airport transfers, even from Cancun. The $15 was tips to porters only. (May seem like a lot but with 2 divers with equpment and a 20 month old along we had a LOT of luggage).

Oh, James, if you stayed at the Cozumel Palace, you paid quite dearly for all those inclusions... ;)

Apple's telling me $25....

No doubt, but for the first time doing an AI in Mexico, I felt like I got my money's worth.

Probably more than $25. I think I paid $45 last time I needed a cab from PDC to the airport, and that was with some haggling, I can't imagine it's much cheaper going the other way. If you don't mind watching the worst Sylvester Stallone movies dubbed in Spanish, take the bus!

I really doubt there's any kind of "non tourist" fare for that long a taxi ride, other than what you can get them to agree to. Any locals needing transportation from the airport to PDC would almost certainly take the bus.

I hate the bus...maybe I'll settle for one of those van things...or better yet get on a puddle jumper and make it in 10 minutes!

In January this of this year, we walked right up to the first cab we saw in Playa Del Carmen and said "$40.00 to the Airport." In English. We did not ask. We just stated it with full intentions of going to the next cab untill someone would take us. The cabbie shurgged his shoulders and said sure. Loaded us up and off we went. We had 4 lg suitcases and our carry-on's. I was surprised it was that easy.
I guess it would not be much different going the other direction.
