I paid $350 for the new Hero 7, and $15 for a third party housing that does not require removal of the outer case. The outer case makes the Hero 7 waterproof to 33 ft, so it's like extra protection should the housing leak a bit, odds are the camera will be fine.

If you're considering a modest upgrade, I just sold my Hero 4 on Ebay including waterproof case, 3 batteries, charger, and mounting hardware for $90. That's about what they go for generally.
