I am interested in what people consider as handy & essential tools to have for the general scuba toolbox for tweaking and repairs (not overhauling regs or anything major like that). items that will make the diver more self sufficient in handling common types of situations that could befall one's rig or interefere with diving. I dont want to limit it to just tools for the "save a dive kit," (there may be tools you leave at home but you find indispensible to have, for example).

I already have one of those swiss army knife type combi tools with the adjustable wrench, o-ring and screwdriver in one big ungainly handle, so I am not talking about that type of thing. I find that, although it is useful to have around in a pinch, it is pretty limited and difficult to use for some situations.

thanks!

Just off the top of my head, I keep the following things in my kit:

lots of other useful stuff that hasn't come to mind.

The swiss army tool does a good job in a pinch. Add to that a small adjustable wrench and an o-ring tool and you would be pretty well covered for most field able repairs. Things I have needed and not had that kept me from diving are high on my list. An o-ring kit, an o-ring to fit your BC inflater hose is a good one.

I always get ribbed for the size of my tool... box...;)

I carry much the same as Matt. Would also include a roll of duct tape and O ring pic to the list.

I have a small adjustable wrench, a set of Allen wrenches, and a surgical probe which is perfect for extracting o-rings. I also have one of the SCUBA tools, which is mostly used as a screwdriver. And a pair of titanium shears.

I carry reg plugs, DIN caps, spare wing nuts, a spare buckle, lots of bolt snaps and double-enders, cave line and bungie, etc., but those aren't tools.

The thing that stays home that I couldn't live without is the soldering iron.

A very comprehensive save-a-dive kit can be found here.

I didn't mention the "dive tool", but I have one of those too. I'm not terribly impressed with the o-ring pick on it.

If I had one "unusual" recommendation for the kit, it would be the thermoplastic. All you have to do is heat it in water (hot tea will do), and you can sculpt/mold it into any replacement plastic part you may need. When cool, it's sturdy, and very similar to nylon. You can reheat and reuse it as needed.

Consider a spare regulator; set up and ready to go. Never miss a dive brcause you have to repair your reg.
