If the wreck starts around 30', and it's in Cebu (which SOME divers OCCASIONALY visit) why are they chopping it up for scrap?

Still looking for "MacArthur's Gold?"

Think they were trying to salvage some wrecks in Subic last year too, but a local operator helped put a stop to that, so I've heard.

Come on guys! How much is rusty steel plate going for these days?

Rusty steel plate? well actually quite a bit, the cost of steel has more than doubled in the last 5 years, turns out the chineese want to use it to build their new infrastructure and have plenty of money to buy it.
I have been wondering how long it would take before sinking wrecks for fun loving people to visit would no longer be economical.

Rik, a couple months ago the vessel went down during a typhoon with toxic cargo onboard and this company was in charge to extract the cargo and, I believe, to also salvage the ship. Since then, a few cargo containers have continued to be swept to shore around the area every now and then.

As for the USS New York in Subic, I believe that operation was entirely for scrap metal to make a quick buck. That was upsetting. Last I heard they were still at it but good to hear that the locals put a stop to it.

Say, thanks Chip. No mention was made of Toxic cargo, etc. I just figured they were scratchin' for a buck. Thanks again on the update. In that case, they have my blessing.
