I'm in the process of setting up a cold water rig (lake Michigan), and I want to base it on a Scubapro MK17 Din first stage. (allready have it)
I know I'm going to use an R190 for the octopus, but not quite sure of the primary 2nd stage. I am leaning towards the G250, but would like some input on any other options.
Thanks in advance,
Jim Breslin

This issue has been covered so many times on the board.

I think G250 & G250HP are the best match. Some members also recommend X650 though. It had a reacll history, so lost some popularity.

I really like the older stuff. If you coud find a Balanced Adjustable or plain Adjustable for a primary, the metal 2nd should be better in cold water than the plastic stuff. Also, another Adjustable for the octo would give you a better performing secondary with good user control over FF by cranking down on the adjustor when you are not breathing it. You may have to spend a little time shopping, but they show up on ebay fairly regularly at pretty good prices. If you pick one up with something like a Mk5 primary, you could pair that with your R190 as a backup rig.

I use a G250 HP and an R190 with a Mark 17, limited number of dives on it, but have been in the upper 30's (less than 30 feet). No problems, starting to trust the setup.

I personally like G250hp.

think about S600

If you are willing to go with an older reg, I would get a D400, or one of the older metal barrel G250's. If you want to make sure that you buy something new I would, personally go with the X650. But again you aren't going to find anything that will preform as well as a good D400.

I dive the MK 17 first and a S600 second. They perform flawlessly. My second choice would be a G250hp. I've tried the mk17 and x650 they work well, but still they would come in third place.

Or wait and see if in couple of months SP will in fact re-introduce the G250 as was rumoured on this forum.

Since the Mark 17 is a good cold water regulator i would go wit a metal second stage,
Scuba pro does not make one right now ,
Maybe you can find a g250 or d400
otherwise X650 would be a good second stage , fully balanced.
