If you found a wallet on land what would you do?

If you found a wallet in the bottom of a lake/ocean/river/etc. what would you do?

Any kind of ID in it? You can also post a "Found: wallet at so and so Lake. Call/email to ID." Then if anyone responds, you have all the info, i.e. what was in it, that it was underwater, etc.

I think it's yours after 30 days or so, but that would vary with location.

Will anyone take the opposite argument for throwing the wallet back in? Or is it taboo since we all know it's wrong?

What possible benefit could be obtained by throwing it back? If it is trash, throw it away...If not, find the owner.

What was in the one you (obviously...) found?

Um, it was mine...

Lost at Lake Travis...

With right around $100.00 in it...

(am I close?)

I think if I found a wallet with some ID I'd try to return it (complete).

If there's no ID, it's mine.

If I found a million dollars in drug money, well, I don't think the Feds need the evidence THAT bad...

Take the money out and throw the rest away. No money in it, then I'd look for ID, return it and ask them for some money.

Just kiddin'

Either way, look for ID and return it. No ID, well it sucks to be them now doesn't it.

Same for both instances, if it has ID I would try to find owner one way or another... no answer, it is mine after a couple of months.

Throw back in? why?

I didn't find a wallet. Just pissed off some people at work when telling the story of a mate who found a wallet, grabbed the cash, and tossed the rest back in.

Dunno. If you wanted the cash, you couldn't return the wallet, because they know who you are at that point, and I guess you stole the cash, so they could report the authorities. They would probably not give you a reward. They would probably have already had replacements of everything made. Some people would be mean about the return also. I would not have the cash to mail their stuff back. Who knows if the address is current. So, I learned at least to give a good reward equal in value to what you lost. How much do you value what was lost?
