I had the same question a while ago. Its under a thread called "vehicle security".

For some reason I cant seem to post a link to it, maybe someone else can help me out tonight.

Thanks

If you can get a regular key that will open the door that can get wet, just lock your other keys in the car and put your door key in your boot. I put mine in the space between the zipper and the flap behind it, zip it up and then zip my wetsuit pantleg over top. Over 60 dives and haven't lost it yet!

One of my (electronic) keys gas taken on a dive once. All electronics were ruined as a result. Luckily it still opens and starts the car. So, I just put in in a container, attached inside a pocket of my BCD and continue to take it with me.

There's alway a "keymaster" available on clubdives.

Put the key in your gas cap, or buy one of those little magnetic boxes that you can stick on to the car out of site.

One bad thing about VW keys is that they are smooth on the edges and are cut inside. I have never seen a blank like this at a lock shop. The "regular" key has a replacement cost of about $150... TOO much to risk. The Ford I traded in when I got the VW had keys that could be made anywhere, including Home Depot.

I have a set of keys (car keys only) clipped to a snap clip that I put on my chest D-ring. It works pretty well, but I always worry about accidentally unsnapping them. When I wear a wetsuit, my little 3ml O'Neil has a key pocket just inside the zipper.

I've done several shore dives, and boat dives, and don't like leaving my wallet or keys behind.

I bought a little, flat, waterproof box on a string that goes around my neck. It will hold a single key (without ring), drivers license, and credit card or cash. It rides quite nicely under the bib of my farmer john, against my chest.

I guess if I wash up somewhere I want to have ID and cash.

Hasn't leaked yet...

I shore dive almost exclusively and fortunately don't have fancy keys for my 1994 Toyota Corolla. My BC (Sherwood Freedom) has a very handy little clip inside the front pocket where I can securely attach my key. I just make sure I rinse the key before inserting into a lock, and it's been fine for some time now.

I tried ziploc bags - one in another and then in a little storage box stored in my BC. It didn't work - so bad that water got in to the alarm key. Being 250km from home I had to call the RAC (AA/CAA) and get them to let me in. In the process the alarm had to be destroyed - and yes, I had to buy a new one.

Next time it'll be in a dry-box (IF I can find somewhere that will charge less than US$30 shipping for a US$7 item) or in my drysuit somehow.
