I've got a firm grasp on the stalking, lenght, tip, bands and a few others but onet thing that doesn't get talked about much is the actual release of the pole spear. From the moment you release what do you do with your thumb? Do you hold on to the band? what about with a float line? Do you get more reach if you release the whole spear? How long should the band be ? What's the ideal hand postion in relation to the spear tip? Any other suggestions to first time spear poler? thanks i look forword to hearing from the experts.

First off, welcome to the boards.

Expert I'm not, but I hang onto the band. Never used a float line.

You don't get any more range if you let go of the spear.

Good luck

There are different ways to hold the polespear rubber. I only put my thumb through the rubber then stretch and grab the spear. I just release and the spear shoots forward. My hand and thumb are in the open hand position. So there are only 2 positions. See fish 1. Stretch rubber and grasp shaft. 2. Release to normal open hand position.

I do not hang onto the band. I just swim forward and grab the pole.

You only need a float line for big fish or if you are freediving in low vis so you don't lose your spear. On SCUBA or freediving for small fish do not need floatline. Probably do not need floatline for larger bottom fish on SCUBA.;)

Get a longer polespear for more power and reach. Stretch the band about 1/2 to 2/3 of pole length depends on rubber.

The only thing I can think of is
Go and kill something for dinner.:D

Welcome to ScubaBoard. . . Your question has reached thousands of divers, around the world. . . But you need to reach a few hundred, that may not read this welcoming area. Go to the top of the page and click on "Forums". A long list of interests will pop out at you, and there are people talking about equipment, training, travel, everything you can do under the water. Scroll half way down the list and repeat your question on the Underwater hunting forum.

I've not done much with a pole spear, The game I hunt often won't hold still long enough to get a good shot. So I've used spearguns. But when I tried a pole spear, I put the band around my hand, pushed the pole to stretch the band, held on till I was close, then opened the hand to let the band push the spear through my hand. Go to the underwater hunting forum, you'll find divers that can help you find and hunt. . . When's dinner?

It sounds like you have not practiced shooting the pole spear. Go out in the front yard (or maybe the back is better) and throw down a 2-liter soda bottle cap and try to shoot it with your pole spear. After 20-30 tries, you will understand how to hold it, release it and aim it. For me it is not too much different than shooting underwater. And it help aerate the lawn. I might remove the tip and protect the threaded end with some duct tape if you have an expensive tip. Then do the same practice on a sandy bottom in the water.

welcome aboard
