Got hooked by Cousteau. Then found it to be my happy place.

I grew up as a competitive swimmer, loved free diving and anything related to being in the water. I always wished I could be a fish and loved to swim in rivers and currents pretending like I was a fish as a kid. The single greatest factor that made me fall in love with Scuba Diving was spending more time underwater. I still wish I could go longer.

Spending summers at the Jersey shore I was an avid snorkeler from the age of 9. Scuba was just the next logical step.

My wife and I visited Cozumel, and we decided we would go back there every other year. I took a discover scuba dive there, and it was nice. I had done wone many years before elsewhere, and that was good, too. Therefore, I decided I would get certified so that on our trips to Cozumel, I could do a few dives. That was my plan--a few tropical dives every other year.

I got certified on an impromptu trip to Puerto Vallarta, and it was not a great certification experience. Feeling I needed more instruction, when we got to Cozumel, I took AOW class right away. I was the only student. It was a very good class that helped me a lot. I felt like I was getting the hang of it.

When the class was over, I went on my first real world dive on one of the Palancar reefs. My wife snorkeled above us the entire time. As our group went along, we were joined by a giant grouper and a huge angel fish. Both stayed with the group the entire dive, barely out my my reach.

That was it. The "few dives every other year" plan was history.

Never thought of it until we moved from Manitoba to the coast of Nova Scotia 20 years ago. Immediately got certified. Only reason to do that was I was a life long shell collector. The DM thing was OK for 4 years. That was a bonus. And occasionally I poke spear a fish for dinner.

Obviously, at first Cousteau TV shows in the 70s as a kid. Then, after practising, the fact that it is to me somewhere between yoga and meditation for my brain.

Fun to meet your here again, mate ! Just the same story for me, only regret, not been able to start sooner, although 19 years old is not so bad, especially when you're going 54...

Sea Hunt.

Peace and quiet away from my wofe, added bonus of her not being able to text and call me every 5 min on when im getting back. As soon as the kid is old enought to dive he can come with to enjoy the peacefulness.
