I need to get a stringer for my up coming spear fishing trip. Just curious what kinda stringer do you use?

http://www.spearfishing.cc/

go to this site and buy one of these stringers. best on the market hands down. you actually can kill the fish with one of these if your shot did not kill the fish. these are used by all the pros and commercial guys. I like the one handed operation type it allows me to hold the fish with my shaft with one hand and string it with the other to gain control of the fish. you string them through the eyes unless it is a trigger fish then you go through the mouth and out the gill so you dont get bit

Ironhed is a very solid hunter and his advise is right on. Here is a picture of Ray Odor's stringers:

One of the other things you will need to consider is how you attach the stringer to either your gun, your float, or your BCD. Alot of us have modified our attachment with a "Squeeze" clip. This way if your stringer is grabbed by a greysuit, you can pinch and release it without being dragged through the water fighting with a suicide or brass clip. There are many many other ways of getting fish on the boat, including liftbagging them, but I'm only showing you one option if it is attached directly to your BCD.

Thanks for the advice, just bought a stringer from my LDS that is similar to the ones I see here. I can unhook it with one hand, at least on dry land without a fish thrashing around on my spear! I've sharpened the end on it for easier penetration and I'll probably put quick release on it as shown in your pics. Have you had any problems with the QR coming apart when loaded with several pounds of fish?

No, but there are good quick releases and cheap ones. Don't forget to check out the camping/hiking departments for them also and test them by yanking hard, it should not come apart with all your strength pulling on it.

When you spear a fish, get it to the sand/bottom quickly and don't pull the spear out right away. Use the spear as leverage and push the extended point on your stringer through the fish eyes, close the stringer and re-clip it off to your BCD. Then work on removing your spear from the fish. Always keep the fish attached. You will be surprised how even the deadest fish will suddenly shake and wake up to swim out of the kung-foo grip you thought you had on him. Especially AJ's and the donkey ride they give!

Good luck hunting and post up picts of your 1st catch, no matter what it is.
