Gombessa: I grew up in Shamokin, PA about 13 miles west of Centralia. I have been through Centralia many times

Please tell me there is fire and
brimstone, or at least a bit of visible smoke. The idea of a near-perpetual, hidden underground fire is just enthralling. And kind of the opposite of scuba.

Gombessa: Yes, there is smoke, I don't know about the brimstone. Anthracite-hard coal- is a very slow burning coal just a step away from a diamond. We used it for heating and it burned to a very fine ash.

The Anthracite vein in the US runs from, approximately, Scranton in the NE to Shamokin in the SW about 90 miles. The rest of the coal in this country is "soft coal" bituminous coal used in steel smelting etc.

The area we are talking about sits atop this rich vein of coal. There are many "bootleg mine shafts" Locals, unfortunately, often throw garbage into the abandoned mine shafts and fires can develop-hence Centralia.

When we were growing up mine foreman came to our grade school to warn us about the bootleg mine shafts and unexplored dynamite and caps that claimed a few kids every year.

Until the Interstate highways went in the area was very insular-still is in many ways.

So; if you go to Centralia you will see smoke and a largely abandoned town. Stop in Shamokin and have a Coney Island hamburger and a Pizza at Jame's in the 5th ward. You will be greeted with the typical coal region slang "How are ya butt? What do youse want?"

Thanks for that delightfully colorful description. You totally made my day.

Hockey Sticks Eh! There are 5 in the corner to the right of me. Have to run to my dad's house for weapons american style....

WOW! Today is my lucky day, directly to my left is a fulton armory match grade ar15, a custom built .223 varmint rifle,an armalite ar50 .50cal rifle, an m1 garand, and the ammo for them and my dogs. yesterday it would have been a truck with a snow plow on it, a mag-lite and a cup of coffee

Yeah..That's what I'm talking about!

Nice Zombie quiver.

I have often wondered if Zeds can live in freezing temps.
