So now I know what they do during Fungus training:

Apparently the SNL skit with Shearer and Short is NA on the tube :(. It is so funny. I do not agree, synchronized swimming does take great skill. The life jacket was funny, I can just see a bunch of DIR trainees in all black tutus and inflated wings water dancing to choreographed moves, 1, 2, 3, share air, 3, 4, 5, a valve check, 6, 7, 8, frog kick now all together :stirpot:.

Frat boy funny, beer pong funny disrespectfully not self deprecatingly funny therefore not funny at all

I was serious! I really do not know what "team diving" is! I did a search on this website and didn't find much. What is it?

Google DIR and GUE. It is an approach or method of diving, mostly technical oriented but can be applied in recreational diving, that utilizes the same equipment configuration (modified Hogarthian), all members of the team have the same protocols and same training and operate in unison to achieve the goal of their dive. There is nothing wrong with this other than Solo being a no-troll zone, the post was a troll. In fact such training is an excellent base (Fundies) and the training can be useful regardless for all sport diving. DIR/GUE training and Hogarthian rigging eschew personal preference for identical rigging of their gear. So we would not even have a discussion of how to rig a pony bottle because a pony is never DIR and even if there was a such thing as a round square or a DIR Solo diver, there would be a specific way to address the pony bottle rigging and only that way and that way only would be acceptable. As an example of, just saying, no personal preference allowed .

Discussion of DIR just does not belong in a dedicated Solo diver forum and vice versa. Thus all the carping.

Ok, thanks for the info. It sounds like more reasons for me to keep on Solo diving!

GUE/DIR has much to offer, and I have taken many positive things from their equipment config and approach to diving. They really do have exceptional instructors and outstanding training. However, the "team diving" mandate and the anathema regarding solo diving is just not for me. I seriously considered taking fundies (the GUE entry level course for certified divers) but just could not get myself to pull the trigger.

I'm 77 years old. Have been diving for 56 years. Been diving solo most of my life because diving with someone who has much less experience scares me. Twice, when diving with a buddy, they panicked and those were unpleasant experiences.

Diving solo allows me to go at my own pace and enjoy the scenery without worrying if a dive buddy wants to go slower or faster. Also don't have to surface earlier if buddy runs low on air.

I’m new, so I have all kinds of questions. So why solo diving? Don’t have to find a buddy? You like to explore alone without constantly looking over your shoulder for your buddy? You dive with other people, but like having a two independent air sources when things go haywire? Do most of you who are solo certified go truly solo?
I can be a buddy with the least or best trained and thought it was required. Lo, but...nay, not so. If one is confident in abilities, has redundant everything, and dives without exceeding training conditions...it may be a thing to behold. I have enjoyed some momentous occasions of melding with our aqueous neighborhood. This is not a light decision to make for yourself, but I have immensely enjoyed going it alone...!
