OK - still not getting it though (sorry, I'm slow about these things sometimes). If I am wearing my mask,....

Its for those times when you are not wearing your mask, don't have any means of backup mask, and are SOL so to speak.

Diver0001:
Are you serious? Oh we have *got* to try this....

R..

I've heard it from multiple sources, it may be internet folklore *shrug*

I'm in the pool on Thursday.... new goal in life....create a bubble mask.

God I'm such a geek....

Ah! I get it I think. Bubble mask as in mask created by a bubble, not as in bubble in your mask. Interesting concept!

Aye, underwater vision requires an airspace, whether its a mask or air trapped in some manner without the pane of glass you should get some vision.

I'm wet on Friday, we'll compare notes this weekend.

I've tried it in the past (along with some other foolish things :D ). It is very difficult to achieve and the vision is highly distorted at best. Almost impossible to form the seal needed.

Not really. It requires light to focus on the retina. The easiest way to accomplish this is with an airspace. It could also be done with contacts.
