what is this bubble trick?

I have been searching all around and can't find the answer to my question. I keep seeing and hearing fleeting references to the 'bubble trick' - I don't mean blowing the bubble rings, but ome sort of ascent rate trick you can use when your computer, watch, and depth gauge all cr@p out at the same time. I'm pretty into redundancy so I would love to know more about it. Something about a hand over your eyes and blowing a bubble? Can someone shed some light?

Do not ascend faster than your slowest bubble.

..... which means a bubble about a mm or two in diameter. When it grows much larger pick a new one.

The slowest bubbles are the smallest (foam) bubbles. Keep in mind, they increase in size as they rise, so you have to keep looking for new bubbles. Also that gives you an ascent rate of approximately 60 feet per minute. That rate has not been recommended for many years, you want to cut that rate in half - at least.

That's the bubble mask, keeping the hand tight to your forehead exhale enough air to create an airspace around your eyes so you can view your guage/buddy/whatever. Search the bubble mask, its an interesting, maybe fanciful concept for us youngins but lots of old-timers swear they learned it in OW...
