what is the record for depth. What is the farthest someone has been. For example has anyone been to 400 feet?

John Bennett made a record breaking dive to 308 meters, or just deeper than 1000', on open circuit scuba. To the best of my knowledge, it remains a record - however attempts continue to go deeper. Citation is here:

(Click on "testimonial" along the left margin, then again on "deepest dive ever" in the TX100 text...)

Its sort of a meaningless record, however, there you go.

Please take the time to fill out your profile. It really helps people to provide meaningful answers if they know something about which perspective you're asking from, what your relative experience level is, what sort of diving you do and where, etc. It provides context in which your question can be answered in a more meaningful way.

Welcome to SB,

Yes, lots of people have been to 400ft.

The depth record for open circuit scuba is a bit over 1000ft.

The July/August edition of Alert Diver has a Rolex ad on the rear cover and its ad copy cites Dr Sylvia Earle's record dive of 1250ft for deepest untethered solo ocean dive. Presumably that means that others have gone deeper in tethered setups. These gear configurations are not used in recreational scuba diving.

But Sheck Exley set a depth record of 867 feet 3/28/89 at Mante, Mexico. He died on April 6, 1994 on a dive below 900 feet in Xacatun, Tamaulipas, Mexico. On mixed gases. Has anyone surpassed these? I don't know?

Alive or dead?

Alive or dead?
We have a couple between 600-800'. Looks like they are trying to set time records as well.

Wasn't John Bennet the first man over 300mtrs/1000ft?

John Bennet would also fall under the "dead" category.

Yes the first man over 300mtrs died on a 40mtr trimix dive. Sort of makes you think...
