I bought a rebreather when gas started to be hard to come by.

A guy I know did that. Bought a brand-new, fully-optioned Meg, plus the training. I think he said he paid around $14K or so, OTD for everything.

I dunno, but for where I'm at in my diving career, $14K buys a LOT of helium.

(I've got nothing against rebreathers, I just think that the gas cost/unit-cost break-even point is too far off for most people.)

If you can get it. The issue we're having is that you can't get it at any price. In which case it's a logistical decision, not an economic one.

I just dove the Jodrey a few weeks ago. Wondering when I'll be able to do a dive like that again? Time will tell. We got lucky and scored some of the last remaining bottles on the East Coast. Or so we were told anyway. So much for my Trimix course :D
