Gazetteer Indo-West Pacific: Maldives and Christmas I. in the eastern Indian Ocean to Fiji, north to Taiwan and the Philippines south to Vanuatu; Palau (Belau) in Micronesia.
Diagnosis: Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-14; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 12-14. Color: dark brown, bluish gray ventrally. There is a broad white band on the caudal peduncle, often edged anteriorly with black. The pectoral fin base is covered entirely by a black spot.
Biology: Inhabits steep outer reef slopes. Occurs singly or in small groups and remains close to shelter.
