What is quite irritating is someone who doesn't understand the benefits of the whole and only sees the benefits of their proported change to come storming into the DIR forum and proclaim that practitioners are stupid lemmings. The reality is that most of us have a pretty decent grasp of the whys and chose the approach that makes the most sense for us already. AND that choice happens to co-incide with the basic DIR framework so its fairly easy to put that label on it afterwards. I have never put a label on myself and then tried to figured out what I was supposed to do because of the label.

It works both ways however. A DIR/GUE proponent tells a recreational diver, in the basic scuba forum or another non-technical or DIR forum that their choice of gear is not safe.
I was once told by a member that my fins were an entanglement hazard as they might get caught up on a cave line. I was not diving in a cave.;)

Seriously? Do you have a link to the post?

"Cave line" is used for lots of things outside a cave like spools + SMBs but even the most abominable fins are not generally an entanglement hazard except in kelp.

Well I can say that I have a better understanding of what DIR and GUE is all about. I cant see me diving in with both feet.

There is a fairly large group of GUE and UTD divers in the Vancouver + Island area. You might try actually diving with them sometime, its a bit more true to life than the internets...

... and what will you do with your other foot when you go diving?

I'll look, but why do you consider those fins abominable? Have you used them?

I played with a pair once (in the dry) although they aren't that popular here so I have never borrowed any for UW use.

I think that gear should generally be optimized for UW use. To me, those fins are a crutch to avoid the simple task of removing them, which even in CA surf is not that difficult to learn. If a hinge were to break you would be finless. Although even SS spring straps can break, minimizing the stuff that can break either in the gear box or underwater is important to me. The amphibian has a bunch of unnecessary "features" which are really just additional points of failure. Diving is expensive, cancelling dives due to broken gear is esp. frustrating.

I have been diving with a bunch of DIR divers. I guided 3 a few months ago, they were great divers. I have a good buddy who I have nicknamed the Kool Aid kid...he is soaking it up. I get alot of info from him also.
I don't take everything on the internet as the gospel, there are way too many opinions and emotions to get the whole picture, but at least it gives you something to think about.
I have gained some knowledge from this post, and will ask a few more questions as they come up.

Thanks again to the opening poster and all who put their 2 cents in.

OH...and I suppose my Force Fins dont quite work in the DIR world?? ;)
