I like other have some toruble equalizing so I force it. Instead of making a "hisss" sound which would be normal it makes a "squeek" sound when I force it . No pain, just different sound.

The day after I got home from my dives I wake up and I feel dizzy and kinda "sick like" as if the flu was coming down on me. I admit I totally ignored it. I let three weeks go by. I feel fine now but still am dizzy-like. The room does not actually ever spin, just just feels like it's going to. It just feels like motion sickness. I also have a loudish "crackle" sound in both ears whenever I swallow and some minor discomfort (not really pain, feel like pressure) in both ears that comes and goes at random.

OK, so yesterday I decide to finally go to the doc. It has been three weeks. I'm thinking I have a middle/inner ear infection and told them about the diving, etc expecting I would be receiving some antobiotics. They did not do much. They had some machine that from what I understand seems to be able to tell if there was water behind my ears. It spit out some line graph chart on a printer. He looks and say "Your ear are not GREAT but seem OK". He then looks in my ears and says the drums look fine.

He then proceeds to tell me he thinks I might have some fluid in my ear and that's causeing the dizzyness. He prescribes me some Zyrtec D, says that should dry them out and tells me to give it a few days.

I don't know about you, but I don't buy it. I have been taking this Zyrtec for two days and don't feel any better. Still just as dizzy. And if it was just fluid, why would I have some discomfort/pain in my ears? Why do my ears "crackle" each time I swallow? I don't know anythng but I think I know more than this guy. I personally still think I have a inner or middle ear infection.

How much longer should I try the Zyrtec D? Should I toss it and go get another opinion?

It doesn't seem as if you have gotten much response to your problem.

A second opinion would seem to be indicated at this point. Your best bet would be to seek out a good ENT man (Ear, Nose, and Throat). If you can find one who also is a diver, that would be best! Good luck! Hope you can find some help.

Tel them your symptoms. Ask for a referral to an appropriate doctor in your area.

Don't just cross your fingers and hope that the next ENT you pick out of a hat is competent to treat diving injuries.

I have the same thing--have an appointment with an ENT doc , but not for a week, what the hell is it anyway----it's been 5 weeks!!!!!!!!!??????????

I just noticed that you posted your comments in July '03----I'm hoping someone would answer a bit sooner than that----ANYONE?

I had the same problem without dizziness. Inner ear barotrauma grade 1. It was not painful and took forever to hear right. I was put on sudafed and guiafen. I make sure to equalize earlier and more often now.

Ditto here...wrapped up my OW cert dives over the weekend with slight difficulty equalizing my ears. Once equalized, dives were unremarkable at depth of 25'...wore a hood. Slight fullness in ears, minor ache and crackling with swallowing upon awakening the next morning...no dizziness or flu-like symptoms however. Today, second day following dives, visited my ENT...hearing tests showed slight conduction loss and physical examination revealed Inner Ear Barotrauma which explained hearing results...will reverse as inflammation resolves. Prescribed Methlyprednisolone dose pack with follow-up visit next week. Prognosis...should be able to resume diving in a couple weeks. As a new diver, I had no prior experiences to serve as reference and with a trip planned for Cozumel in a month, didn't want to risk canceling dives or flight for that matter. Thoeries?...perhaps, didn't vent hood adequately?...equalizing too forcefully? not equalizing often enough? looking forward to getting back into the water to assess myself...
