I base carry on VS checking based on my connections.

Flying all night, one stop...Guam or someplace where I sleep at the gate: check it in my Pelican disguised in a duffle.

Going through Puerto Rico or theft prone multiple connections: backpack

basicaly, I weigh out who is more likely to *lose* it, sleepy confused me or the airlines, and how many sherpa buddies I have.

he he Don't fall in love with a plan

In packed luggage. Usually in a soft sided collapsible cooler that I then use to take on/off boat and as a mini-rinse tank.

Otherwise, just wrapped in clothes.

Low maintenance, that's me!

With all due respect, Cadillac maybe, but the Rolls Royce are Zero Halliburton.:D

I won't argue with you there. For that price I hope they include a gold plating or a diamond insert :-)

I can say though that the US Navy uses Pelican cases of all sizes by the thousands for just about everything you can think for from weapons transportation to sensitive electronics.

Don't get me wrong ... I think that Pelican Cases are great and I use them for all sorts of things, including cameras.

In testimony to the quality of the Zero Haliburtons, however, my small one with two Nikon F2s, motor drives and a few lenses fell out of a helicopter in Vietnam at about 1000 feet and bounced on the tarmac. It remained shut and nothing was damaged. I still use the case, it just has a small dent, almost unnoticeable, in one corner, But they were less expensive in the old days, back when they were built as camera cases rather than high end luggage.

Thalassamania,

No sweat - I didn't take it that way at all. That is quite a testimonial to the ruggedness of the Haliburtons. Better the case took that trip than you :-)

I only brought up the Navy's use of them because I'm a contractor and walk past 100s (if not more) of all sizes of Pelican cases everyday going to an from my office.

I put my Ike case in the box it came in and I have a soft case for my A620, put them all in my dufflebag carryon with my reg/gauges and wrist computer.
