I know a picture is worth a thousand words, but I don't have a picture so a thousand words will have to suffice. I was diving in Laguna yesterday (diver's cove) and I saw something odd. It was a cluster of very thin white tubes. I would say the tubes were about 1/5" across and varied in length from about about 2-3 inches. The individual tubes were clustered together and created a "colony" about the size of a potato that resembled coral. In the opening of each tube there was a small "creature". Each "creature" was about 1/4" across, red, circular in shape, and looked like 30 or so downward-pointing small eyelashes. Again, there was one of these in each tube. At first glance, I thought the creatures were simply algae; as I went to lighly touch the structure, all the creatures at once retreated to their tubes, and then reemerged a few seconds later. Anyone know what this is?

Possibly colonial tube worms. (Dodecaceria fewkesi)

That looks about right, except the colony I saw was much more well-formed.
Thanks!
