Hi to all of you here in the board.
I plan to buy a DC-50 strobe by Ikelite. I am new in the digital photography . Can any one of you make comments on this strobe, Is it good to start my hobby with? Is it possible to use it in a WA situation?
What is the difference with the sync cord and the slave. If I use the sync cord, does my internal flash function simultaneously with the strobe? Please help.:)

And not knowing what your camera is yet....

I too am looking for a strobe for digital and had planned on going with the DS-50......HOWEVER

I talked to Ikelite direct and they asked what my intended use of the strobe was.....They informed me If I was going to stay with Macro photography the DS-50 would work great. But when told I had intentions of WA Photography they felt that I would most likely be disappointed with that strobe (flash would not fill the photo not as powerful) and suggested either 2- DS-50's or a DS-125(the Sea & Sea YS90-DX would be similar in power to the DS-125)....This using an Olympus 3040.... That being said here is a link to discussion you may have already read on two, more powerful strobes Sea & Sea YS90-DX and the DS-125 Strobes There are lots of other discussions on this same topic in this area...

Have fun!!!

Thanks for your response.
I plan to buy an olympus 4040z in an Ikelite housing. The pictures I plan to take are reefs , divers and fishes. Though sometimes I plan to do WA shots but not too often. Follow up concerning the sync cord. Does the camera itself flashes simultaneously with the strobe if i use the sync cord?

With the system you’re looking at ( 4040 and an Ikelite housing)
you do not use a sync cord ( hard wired through the housing to the camera ) but rather a wireless slave sensor …. See link below. This sensor uses the on board camera's flash to trigger the strobe to fire. The sensor is aimed at the housing/ camera flash which then sends the signal to the strobe i.e. DS-50

So yes ...... to get the strobe to fire your camera must fire first...

Hope this help's
