We live in Valparaiso, FL and dive out of Destin,
Most of us know that our second stage alternate should be secured so as not to drag across the coral or fill up with sand. Here’s another reason to not let it flop around (even when topside).

While on the Seahorse in Pompano last week, I watched a guy stand on the dive step and raise his hand to put his primary in his mouth. This movement also raised his elbow which flung his loose alternate onto a railing where it wedged between the rail and the dive-flag holder. Before I could yell “waaaaaiiiiiiiiiiit”, he stepped off the platform.

“Kapow!” followed by a 3200 psi <edit: 140 psi> “Whoosh.” Of course the reg fell in the water instead of the boat. That little rubber snorkel keeper on his D-ring might have come in handy.

A bungeed backup would have saved him from that...

would have prevented THAT from happening. The problem with making things idiot proof, is that idiots are just so darned ingenious!

It was probably a good thing the hose gave way at the 1st stage (although it would have been interesting to watch Chris (the DM) turn off the guy's air while three feet of hose whipped around like a snake on crystal meth).

Having your dangly bits ripped off is never fun... Except for the people watching. :jester:

dangly bits??

**cringe**

...but I will admit to having a similar experience.

Used my octopus to inflate my safety sausage, then put it back in its holder. Saw it escape, but I was concentrating on 1) ascending slowly and 2) controlling the line for the sausage, so I let it trail. Nothing for it to bang against at 5m, after all.

Climbed out on to the boat with it still trailing and started walking back to my spot. After a couple of steps, I jerked to a halt. Huh? Turned round to find that my octopus was caught between the slats of the tank rack. No damage done, fortunately.

I am a moron, obviously.
