In my trip report on Key Largo, I mentioned that it was standard procedure to surface halfway through the (low current) dive, get a bearing on the boat, and descend to finish the dive while heading back to the boat. On one of our dives, my wife and I performed this maneuver and descended for the leisurely swim back. Candy proceeded to head off in the wrong direction, so I grabbed her fin and gave her the signal to follow me. Later, she told me that she thought the idiot (me) was going in the wrong direction, but I hadnt given her any choice but to follow. She was surprised when we ended up under the boat.
As it turns out, my wifes left wrist was hurting, so she had wrapped her magnetic necklace around it before the dive. Since she was holding her compass with her left hand, no matter which bearing she took, she was headed south.
