As a scuba newby, I'm amazed by the expertise collected here in one (virtual) place on Scuba Board.

There are posters like me with 0-24 dives, and posters with 5000+ dives. I'm just learning about the bends, and there are people here (lots of them) who do rebreathers, saturation diving, cave diving, who knows what-all.

As a neophyte reading about disasters and near-disasters that have occurred, I realize that my prime focus at my level needs to be on being as safe as possible. This is not a sport for the faint of heart.

I don't know if you've been reading about accidents and such lately on SB, but it's so impressive that the people directly involved in the rescue operations have been people right here on Scuba Board in many cases, or acquaintances of people here.

And a recent issue about a possibly faulty signal device prompted the manufacturer to post here about the ongoing investigation, as if Scuba Board were the scuba community itself. Well, heck, maybe it is.

I'm just learning about the bends

I'll jump in before anyone else does. Go get a copy of Deco for Divers :)

And yes, it's an amazing online community that seems to include a lot of the real drivers in the sport. Great resource for all.

I agree, incredible site! After Open Water, I was googling TONS of various crap about diving and I soon realized that the top results were usually from ScubaBoard - and they were usually the most detailed answers, with good arguments from all sorts of angles, pretty heated, and extremely amusing. After skimming through the pages, I started learning things I didn't even know I wanted to learn about and just got deeper and deeper and deeper into this bottomless pit of knowledge. Then I dove with some of the folks! Pretty cool site if you ask me!

Another thing I really like about this board is the activity. If somebody posts a question, there will be like 4 pages of responses within an hour! At 3 in the morning, there will still be like 100+ people lurking the basic forum alone. Also, this board is GLOBAL! It seems like there are people from every GPS coordinate on the planet, lol!

+1, I have learnt more from other divers on this board than all courses I've taken combined. I move around a lot and unfortunately missed out on a mentor/befriending an experienced diver. Have done a course here and a course there so no real time to gain an depth understanding. Being a member of this board has enabled me, by asking questions, to gain a more in depth knowledge on various areas of diving. A big thanks to Scubaboard and all those who took the time to answer my questions and to all those that openly share their knowledge. To the OP "Welcome a-board".

It is a great forum.........but, sometimes getting "scuba boarded", is like getting water boarded. ;)
It can be a rough crowd...haha!

The crowd can be rough. I joined in '07. Also joined several other forums. The big plus for SB is simply the volume. There is usually something interesting somewhere. I check those other "wannabees" occasionally and see threads not replied to for months (on the front pages). Then someone "over there" touts how good (and freindly) their forum is as opposed to the big one. Not so. Boring.

I have only been on here a short time, already met half a dozen members in various locations plus made many friends and future dive buddies with similar interests.

It is sites like this that make me really appreciate what the internet can offer.

Glad to be a member of this forum.

I agree on the amount of info that is available here at SB. I find myself scouring the forums for more and more information. There is so much to learn it is like an online scuba course.

I concur. I've met and dived with several members so far. I've found great recommendations for trips, and learned a whole lot more about diving. All kinds of diving. Thank you SB!
